"A few years ago, my husband and I attended a Transition Home seminar. After looking at all the expenses associated with me working outside my home, we realized it actually COST money for me to work. We were spending about $200.00 a year to have me work as a full-time teacher because of clothing and extra supplies I would buy for the classroom out of pocket.
I ended up having to quit my job as a teacher because of some family health problems. We found that if we were more careful with our budget, we could make ends meet. There are really many material things that are not necessary to everyday life. I have found that I can save between $400.00 and $500.00 per year if I consciously make lists and only buy what we need at the grocery store instead of "stocking up". That’s just for me, without even looking at the food and clothing budget for the rest of the family.
I tend to buy impulse gifts for friends and family and have had to control that practice. We are very much spoiled by the expectations and values of "the world", and of course our selfish human nature. Whenever we tighten our belts and really look at what we buy, we ask ourselves "is this a necessity or a luxury?" most of the time the answer is a luxury. I know that God wants us to live life and live it abundantly, but sometimes I live life gluttonously and I don't think that is what He had in mind. Anyway, I find that I can live life abundantly and also do God's work if I am keeping my focus on God and not myself.”
